Picked up the project again. Noticed that several bulbs where broken and one channel is not working at all.
Published the source code for the ez-usb firmware, libusb-based host software and a schematic for the board in its current state on github.
Learned something else today too: How to rotate a video with mencoder:
mencoder VIDEO0003.3gp -nosound -o foo.mp4 -vf rotate=1 -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4

8 oldschool glowballs controlled by software to show sound level:
A switcher circuit was hobbyboarded
..and mounted to the plank
A header connected to a microcontroller lets us control the 8 outputs.
The first plank was burned in effigy after painting.
